Whaleback sits just off I-89 Exit 16, a few minutes from Lebanon and Hanover and an easy stop for Upper Valley families, students, and visitors.
Getting to Whaleback by car
Fastest route from I-89
- Take I-89 to Exit 16.
- Turn onto Eastman Hill Road.
- Continue to the stop sign.
- Turn onto Whaleback Mountain Road.
- Follow Whaleback Mountain Road to the end. The mountain will be on your right.
From Boston
- Take I-93 North from Boston.
- Stay on I-93 North for about 120 miles until Concord, New Hampshire.
- Merge onto I-89 North toward Lebanon / White River Junction and continue for about 35 miles.
- Take Exit 16, turn onto Eastman Hill Road, and continue to the stop sign.
- Turn onto Whaleback Mountain Road and follow it to the end of the road.
From the Upper Valley
If you are coming from Lebanon, Hanover, Norwich, or White River Junction, the simplest approach is usually I-89 to Exit 16, then Eastman Hill Road to Whaleback Mountain Road.
Bus and rideshare note
There are no direct bus routes to the mountain on the current public Whaleback site. The mountain notes that nearby Dartmouth Coach, Greyhound, and Concord Coach stops can get you into the area, but you should plan on a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare for the final stretch.
Parking
Parking at Whaleback is free, but the lots can fill quickly on weekends, powder days, and event nights.
Lower lot
The lower lot is at the mountain base. Use the small blue bridge roughly 300 feet before the lodge.
Roadside parking
Roadside parking is allowed along the approach road, but park only on the side closest to the highway so emergency vehicles can get through.
Overflow parking
When the main areas fill, continue past the lodge and around the rental shop.
Accessible parking
Accessible spaces are located between the lodge and the entrance to the lower-lot bridge.
Hours change with season and event schedule
Whaleback’s public site updates hours seasonally. The most recent winter schedule published on the live site listed:
- Monday: Closed
- Tuesday to Thursday: 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM
- Friday: 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The same public page also noted that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM the race tow and Spout trail may give priority to private training.

- Weekdays: 4:00 PM until the pub empties, with food 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
- Friday Night Lights & Après: food and music 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Weekends: 11:00 AM until the pub empties, with après food and music 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
